Artist's Comments

3 shot vertical pan taken at about 1 in the morning, 10 minute exposure per shot. This is on Mayne Island in BC's Gulf Islands, right out front of my ex-roomie's family's cabin I stayed at for Canadian Thanksgiving this last weekend. If you look closely you can just make out Mt. Baker in the distance above the lights on the horizon.

This is just proof that it never really gets dark, we humans just can't see how bright it really is. ;) My favorite kind of photography, too bad it's so tedious and time consuming. This is the first real, solid use I've gotten out of the new tripod; taken using the 3021BPRO with a 322RC2 pistol grip head and my trusty old Rebel XT and 28-135. The battery ran out during the third exposure, probably because of the work required to power an image stabilizer for that long. :P Whatevs, it came out fine in the end anyway, with nice star trails to boot. Alright. Enough of a description wouldn't you say.

Good amount of edits on this one:
RAW conversion + photomerge/realigning + crop + color correction + frame = Photoshop CS2

Let me know what you think. I know it's lacking compositionally (what with the tree and all) but it's kind of hit and miss when you're shooting in the almost pitch-dark.

This is really interesting. I love how soft the water looks, though you're right - the tree does call attention to itself.

And I wish you could hear the music I'm listening to right now. It really lends itself in a strange way.

Yes, I agree about the tree thing, especially because if you look closely you can tell that it is a pine tree and it shouldn't be yellow bright like that- but I love the water and the sky. This is a really cool type of photography and I award your hiking out so late at night- I think I would start hallucinating or something. hehe- anyways, good work

wow, ive thought a lot about doin a long exposure panorama at night, I guess you just gotta make sure you stay away from any lights at all. Im assuming the tree was light up from the cabin you were at? anyways, as soon as i get my new camera im gonna have to try this out, great picture! I know for a fact that this type of photography is very technicaly demanding and requires tons of work.

Dude, this is "fucking ill," as they say here in Boulder. The star trails add a lot to the image entirely, and I really like the concept. The water adds a nice smooth element, but I have gripes with the tree. Now, I realize that this is a very technically challenging photograph to attempt, but I still think that something should be done about that tree. Everthing else, the rocks, the shore, Mt. Baker(hey! thats where I live), in the background, the grass, is all really sweet, though. I think this is a definite stylistic change in your photography....

Very cool shot. I agree with you about the tree limb in the top right corner...not the best, but it's ok. I'm surprised that your battery ran out from just those exposures... did you leave IS on while it was on the tripod? The IS on the 28-135 isn't tripod-sensing.

The battery had been pretty low for a while when I started shooting to be fair. I left IS on despite the tripod just because it was such a long exposure and I was afraid even the vibrations through the tripod from the deck it was standing on as people walked around might hurt.

Yes, the lights from the cabin proved to be a bit much. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! :thanks:

Heh, my thoughts on the tree exactly - it'd be better if it was a tree that actually turned - nice eye. ;) I didn't really have to hike though, just open the door from my room to the deck.

Yeah, I'm getting a lot of comments about the tree, just as I suspected. I'll look at it again, but I'm worried if I try taking it out entirely it'll make the top half too uninteresting. I'll see what I can do.
